The airbrush is widely used in the arts and crafts because it is a simple tool to use and is a very effective and accurate way of painting anything from canvas to plastic to wood. It is literally a can of paint attached to an air compressor that allows you to control how much paint is sprayed and at what force. The compressor is detachable so it is easy to switch colors at any given time.
Bernoulli’s principle explains how it works. The higher the velocity of moving air, the lower the pressure. In the case of an airbrush, this draws the solvent (i.e. paint) upwards towards the moving air and, when it hits the air stream, the paint particles separate and are carried by the air stream. This is how the spray painting effect occurs.
Using an airbrush is very easy once you have grasped the basic principles behind it. Before you start, you must make sure that you have the right paints and equipment to achieve the effect you want. Also, do not expect to be good at airbrushing on your first attempt. It does take a bit of research and a few practice strokes to learn the spraying technique correctly. It easy enough when you know how though!
Here are some tips to get you started:
- Start with a single action airbrush as it is more economical on the paint and easier to learn. When you have the technique down, try moving on to a double action one because it affords you better control.
- Make sure the compressor on the airbrush is of high quality .
- Always follow manufacturer’s instructions, especially the amount of thinner required.
- Always clean your airbrush after use to keep it in top condition. Instructions on cleaning should come with the item.
Good luck! |
