Making the decision to get a tattoo requires a lot of thought and is not to be taken lightly as there are a lot of factors to consider. So you want one… but what sort of design do you want and where on your body will it go? A tattoo is for life and can say an awful lot about you so you have to make sure the choices that you make are the right ones for you. Look at the designs in a few tattoo parlors to see what previous clients have had or design one yourself, but don’t rush into choosing one that you might regret.
You should always try to decide on the design and placement of the tattoo before you actually go to get it done. There are many sources of information on tattoos on the Internet. Simply use a search engine to find specialist websites. There are occasionally programs on TV about the history of tattooing or tribal art that may be of use to you. The history behind it may give you some ideas for designs and will certainly equip you with more information to make the necessary decisions. Ask other people about their tattoos too, especially how they came to get a particular design, where it was done and who by. Researching parlors is very important because you want to make sure it is professional and, above all, safe. Visit them to take a look at designs because you can get a feel of the place too.
During your visit to tattoo parlors to look at designs, take the time to speak to the tattoo artists that work there. Do they put you at ease? Are they helpful without trying to push you into anything? Will they answer any questions you have? If the answer to any of these questions is no, go elsewhere. They should be willing to answer queries on how they prevent clients contracting diseases like Hepatitis and HIV that are a major risk when getting a tattoo. The parlor you choose should use new sterile needles and ink pots for your tattoo. Licensed parlors are required to practice this technique and would happily provide you with information on the sterile technique so do not settle for anything less because your health should be more important than anything else.
When you are sure that the parlor is safe and actively promotes healthy techniques, speak to the artists for a few minutes to discuss your tattoo. You may need to book a consultation with them because they may be too busy to spare a few minutes that is not in their schedule. Take a sketch or picture of the tattoo that you want and ask for the artist’s opinions. He or she will help to finalize the design and placement but if you don’t feel comfortable with having the tattoo, wait. Consult with the artist until you are happy. If it is a large tattoo, it may not be possible to complete it in one session so make sure you have the entire process fully planned before sitting in the chair for the first time.
Make sure you consider how you may be stereotyped and ask your friends and family for their opinions before you go ahead and get a tattoo. It may also be worth checking your employer’s opinions and policies too. It all adds up to an informed decision that you will not regret. As long as you are absolutely certain that this is what you want, go ahead and get it! |
