As we get older, we rely more and more on photographs to preserve our memories… especially when passing stories on to younger generations. That’s why we must take steps to preserve the photographs today. Using incorrect storage methods or the wrong sort of photo albums can destroy or degrade them. There are a few tips to help keep photos in excellent condition so the memories do not get lost over time.
Photographs are renowned for their vulnerability. Heat, cold, humidity and damp all contribute to the degradation of photos because they cause creasing, discoloration and decaying. Preventing the effects of the elements can be expensive though as it is best to purchase albums that are free from harmful adhesives that can discolour them and make it difficult to remove photos once they are placed.
All plastics in albums must contain polypropylene because that particular material does not stick to the photos, nor does it begin the degradation process. The plastic protects the front and back of the photos, as does wiping them over every now and again with a dry soft cloth to remove any dust or harmful particles. Taking care of photos is not limited to the front either. The same steps must be taken with the back. It is easy enough to limit any damage when you know how. Tender loving care prevents it.
Photos must also be kept out of direct sunlight because that can begin to fade them, even through high-quality plastic or glass. This is also true of air conditioning units or heating elements. Extreme temperatures will also damage albums and thus the photographs inside will lose any source of protection that they once had. If they are likely to be exposed, a change of album may be necessary after a while to keep the photos in the best condition possible. Relocating furniture may also be an idea if you are unwilling to change albums because it would require handling the photos.
Although it is a good idea to mark the photos with times, dates and locations, doing so can be harmful to the photos themselves. Most markers contain harmful chemicals so checking their content is a must. Therefore, when writing in or on albums and photos, it is best to use a worn lead pencil. It will neither smudge over time nor pollute the photos in any way. There are pens available that are designed solely for writing on photos, but they can be expensive.
If you want to pass memories on in the future, it is best to take care of photos now. Careful treatment can easily prevent damage but once degradation begins it cannot be reversed. Photos are valuable assets to anyone if only for the memories that they preserve and a few minutes of your time can help them last a lifetime. Preserving your legacy is worth it. |
