Foray Into The Culinary ArtsIt is very well known that being a good cook and preparing meals is not the same thing. Some people seem just not to be able to differentiate these things. Most of them think that they can become cooks in a middle of a heart beat just because they follow some recipes.
It took me some time to realize that slavishly following some receipts isn't what cooking is all about. It was simply a misconception I have indulged in for quite a long time because the culinary arts actually means knowing about blending ingredients and thus using various cooking methods. I didn’t manage to get rid of my old habit of collecting recipes but at least now I can do my own experimenting when it comes to cooking. It’s very interesting how I manage to employ all sorts of substitutes if it happens that I don’t know the ingredients.
Nevertheless there are some very indispensable ingredients that you are simply not allowed to run out of. It’s about that ingredients that form the basis of the culinary arts you favor, whether they be cuisine from Italy, Spain, Mexico, China or wherever other country. Let’s just take an example to illustrate better the above said: if you are keen on cooking Indian food, garam masala must always be among your ingredients. Garam masala is nothing else but that blend of spices we all know as curry.
The best way to learn how to cook is by trial and also by error. All sorts of mistakes will appear, but this is in fact not so important as they are your best teacher you can get. Nevertheless there are people that prefer to attend fancy cookery classes. These people are obviously after a more systematic and structured approach. I myself would very much like to attend some of these useful cookery vacations, perhaps Italy. What can be more intriguing than combining a well deserved vacation with learning some cooking skills.
Those who don’t know how to cook have absolutely no excuse these days, I suppose. Like never before, there is a huge number of cookery books and articles in magazines. Nowadays food is one of the most hot topics. There is the cult of the celebrity chef and there is also an entire TV channel dedicated to the subject of food. Fact is that a great number of people watch these programs but very few go then in the kitchen to try it out. This is also because the people have so much work to do. It seems that all have stopped making meals from scratch. Thus the culinary arts are being neglected in kitchens where ready meals and processed food are on top. It is also very important to mention the fact that the schools do nothing towards providing the youth with all sotrs of information about nutrition and how to cook proper meals.
Although I am myself form UK I must admit that the British food hasn’t such a great reputation. It's also very true that we did tend to over boil vegetables and everything was a bit unadventurous. In order to come to my country's defense, I think we have improved the way we cook. The need to get familiar with the culinary arts from countries all around the world and the desire to eat at restaurants more has laid the very last brick to our education in this respect. Consequently I think that the British food scene has never been better. We combine our own traditional culinary arts with those from other cultures thus creating a marvelous mosaic. Traditional dishes from England, Ireland and Scotland are also eye catchers.
All in all I want to emphasize the fact that we managed at last to reeducate ourselves in order to render our own dishes in a better light. |
